ODESSA, Kyiv: During an unannounced visit to Odessa, German defense minister Christine Lambrecht said Germany will deliver to Ukraine the first of four advanced IRIS-T air defense systems to protect against drones.
"In a few days, we will deliver the very modern IRIS-T air defense system. It is very important for drone defense," she said.
In recent weeks, Ukraine has been hit by more attacks from Iranian-made kamikaze drones, leading to deaths and seriously damaging infrastructure.
Considered the world's most advanced air defense system, the German armed forces, themselves, do not currently own the IRIS-T system, which costs $147 million each.
Lambrecht has urged Western countries to not be deterred from sending weapons to Ukraine by Russia's threat to use nuclear weapons.
"We have to be very careful. But we must not let ourselves be paralyzed," she said.
Berlin has, so far, resisted calls to intensify its support for Ukraine, arguing that such moves would escalate the situation.
