About Knoxville Times

Knowledge & truth since 1932

This online newspaper has been a part of Knoxville, Tennessee’s third largest city, and the Knoxville Metropolitan area since 2004, after having been created at that time using the same name of a local Knoxville newspaper established in 1932.

Reporting on Knoxville news has been the mainstay of the site, however news of national prominence, international headlines, and global business reports also feature, as well as a section on the media sector.

Knoxville Times gained some notoriety in 2004 when it was linked to a controversy involving then-President George W. Bush who many speculated was wired during presidential campaign debates, wearing an earpiece and receiving instructions on how to answer questions. The controversy arose over video and photographs that appeared to divulge a bulge in the president’s back which many assumed was a type of listening device. A person by the name of Scott Zale who claimed to be a staff member of the Bush-Cheney campaign went public to deny the report saying he had done so after being contacted by the Knoxville Times. There was considerable online speculation that the Knoxville Times had been created to put out the denial, that it was a front for the Bush-Cheney campaign, it was a fake newspaper, and/or was working in cahoots with the Bush-Cheney campaign. As it turned out the story was a set-up, Knoxville Times had no involvement with the controversy, and it appeared no-one by the name of Scott Zale even existed.

Knoxville Times continues to reports the news from Knoxville, the city and metropolitan area. It is strongly identified with social media sites, offers RSS feeds to users, and facilitates the publishing of press releases on its site (subject to review).

The publication’s motto is “Knowledge & truth since 1932.”

Mission: Knoxville Times was conceived in 2002 to provide up-to-the minute local news, together with national and international headlines as part of a global network pooling resources to deliver a quality service to member portals. Each online publication has been modelled on a newspaper format for familiar readability by users. The locations forming part of the network were selected on the basis of demand for news for that location. Knoxville Times, effectively an online newspaper, provides coverage of the city, the metro area, and Tennessee. International news, business and finance stories are common across the network of sites, and are drawn from a number of sources including original in-house journalists and wire services.

Knoxville Times and the other sites are administered by Midwest Radio Network.
